To get a peptide tested, you send a sealed vial to an independent analytical laboratory, pay the fee published on its order page, and receive a signed PDF report that states purity by HPLC, identity by mass spectrometry and, if requested, the quantity in the vial. The report is only worth what you can verify, so the second half of the job is matching it to the vial and to the lab's own records.

Direct answer: Testing a research peptide means commissioning an independent lab to run HPLC for purity and LC-MS for identity on a sealed, unopened vial, then checking the report's lot number, lab name and report code against the vial and the lab's own verification page. A vendor's published COA tells you what the lab found in that batch. Your own test tells you what is in your vial.

Why test a peptide when the vial already has a label?

A label is a claim. A test is a measurement. A label cannot establish the three facts a researcher needs.

The first is identity. A label names a compound, but only mass spectrometry can show that the material in the vial has the molecular mass of that sequence rather than a truncated chain, a different analog or something else entirely.

The second is purity. A lyophilized powder that looks clean can still contain deletion sequences, incomplete deprotection products, residual counter-ions and water. HPLC separates those from the target peptide and reports what fraction of the material is the compound named.

The third is quantity. A vial labeled with a milligram figure may hold that amount, less, or more. Only a quantitative assay against a reference standard can confirm the net content.

Which labs test research peptides?

Two groups of laboratories come up in practice: the lab most often seen in community-posted reports, and the US laboratories that appear on published vendor certificates.

Janoshik Analytical is the laboratory most often named on buyer-commissioned peptide tests. It publishes a public verification list at janoshik.com/verification where the code printed on a report can be checked against the lab's own records. Its current prices are published on the lab's order page.

MDx BioAnalytical is a US laboratory named on published Next Level Labs certificates. Its own site names HPLC-DAD coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, peptide analysis and purity verification, and sterility and endotoxin testing among its services. Its accreditation status is stated on the lab's own site.

ILS Laboratories, Freedom Diagnostics, Chromate and Bioviridian are each one of the laboratories named on published NLL certificates. Their websites could not be reached for this article, so no location, service list or price is stated here for them.

Whichever lab you choose, ask three things: is the method named on the report, does it carry a lot number and a report code, and can that code be checked on the lab's own site.

What does each peptide test actually measure?

Six tests appear on a full panel. Each answers one narrow question.

  • HPLC purity. High performance liquid chromatography separates the sample into its components and reports the target peptide as a percentage of everything detected at a set wavelength. It measures how much of the material is the named compound. It does not confirm which compound that is, or how many milligrams are in the vial.
  • LC-MS or mass spectrometry identity. The instrument measures the molecular mass of the main peak and compares it with the calculated mass of the expected sequence. A match confirms identity. It does not by itself give a purity percentage or a quantity.
  • Quantity (net content in mg). A quantitative assay against a reference standard of known concentration reports how many milligrams of the peptide are in the vial. It measures the amount. It does not speak to purity or contamination.
  • Endotoxin. The bacterial endotoxins test, also called the LAL test, detects lipopolysaccharides from gram-negative bacteria. It measures endotoxin load. It does not detect living organisms or chemical impurities.
  • Sterility. A sterility test incubates the sample to look for viable microbial growth. It measures the presence of living organisms. It does not measure endotoxin, which can be present without any living bacteria.
  • Heavy metals. Elemental analysis, usually by ICP-MS, reports the concentration of metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury. It measures elemental impurities. It says nothing about the peptide itself.

If budget allows one order, HPLC purity plus a mass spectrometry identity check answers the two questions that matter most: is it the right compound, and how clean is it.

How do you send a vial for testing?

The process is the same at nearly every lab: make contact, complete a submission form, ship the sealed vial, and receive a PDF.

  1. Contact the laboratory through its website and ask for its submission form and current fee schedule.
  2. Fill in the form with the compound name, the lot number printed on the vial, the labeled amount, and the tests you want run.
  3. Pay the fee, which the lab publishes on its order page.
  4. Ship the vial sealed and unopened, label intact, following the lab's own packing and shipping instructions.
  5. Receive the signed report, usually as a PDF, and keep the original file.

Three points matter. Keep the vial sealed: an opened vial cannot give a meaningful quantity result, and the lab needs the intact label to record the lot number. Send the vial exactly as it arrived from the vendor. And ask, in writing, that the report state the method used, the lot number, the test date, the analyst or lab signature, and a report code that can be verified later.

How do you read the result and verify the report is real?

Read the report against the vial, not on its own. Five checks catch most forged or recycled certificates.

  • Lot number. The lot on the report must match the lot printed on the vial. A report with no lot number, or one that does not appear on your label, is not a report on your material.
  • Lab name and report code. The laboratory must be named, and the code on the report must resolve on the lab's own verification page. Janoshik publishes one at janoshik.com/verification. If a lab has no public verification route, email the lab directly with the report code and ask it to confirm.
  • Compound name and observed mass. The identity section should show the observed molecular mass beside the expected mass for the named sequence. A mismatch means the vial does not contain what the label says.
  • Date. The test date should fall after the lot was produced and before you bought it. One certificate reused across many lots is a brand-level claim, not a lot-level record.
  • The number itself. Read the purity percentage next to the chromatogram and the method line. A figure with no chromatogram, no method and no column named is a number without evidence.

The practical reading: a verifiable vendor COA with a matching lot number is the baseline, a test you commission is the only unit-level proof, and a community report is context rather than evidence.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get a peptide tested?

Each laboratory publishes its own fee schedule on its order page, and the price depends on which tests you request, so a purity-only request and a purity, identity and quantity package are priced differently. Add the cost of the vial itself, since a sealed vial is consumed by testing, plus shipping to the lab.

How do I verify a Janoshik report is real?

Check the code printed on the report against the laboratory's public verification list at janoshik.com/verification. A genuine report appears in the lab's own records. Then compare the lot number, compound name and date on that record with the vial in your hand. A PDF that cannot be found on the lab's page should not be trusted.

Can I test a peptide at home?

No. Purity and identity require HPLC and mass spectrometry instruments, reference standards and trained analysts, none of which exist outside a laboratory. Color, clarity or how the powder looks tells you nothing about sequence or purity. The only route is to send a sealed vial to an analytical lab and read its signed report.

Does a vendor COA mean my specific vial was tested?

Usually not. A certificate of analysis reports a sample drawn from a production lot, and the vial you receive is another unit from that same lot, identified by the lot number on its label. That is why the lot number matters: it ties your vial to the batch that was actually measured. Testing your own vial is the only unit-level check.
